How to Propagate Rubber Tree from Cuttings

Growing a house plant has become an obsession to most of us since we are under a lockdown or community quarantine after a threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

And I am not one to leave behind, I tell you. Lol. Yeah, I can hear you. Double lol.

One of my hobbies these days aside from sleeping and Netflix, of course, is growing house plants.

And for this blog post, I'll share with you how to propagate a rubber tree. Rubber Tree is one of the sought after house plants that plantitas and plantitos alike are dying to have in their collections. While it is a low-maintenance plant, the thing is this plant is quite premium when it comes to its price. A 50 cm tall can cost you about Php 2,000.

There are ways you can get this plant a bit cheaper but it needs time and effort to make it fully grow or at least alive. The other day, I have bought rubber tree cuttings from Lazada. It's Php 250 per cuttings. See even the cuttings are expensive. Good thing it arrives fresh and healthy, I have to put it in water for a day so they can rest from the delivery. Plants are sensitive in this kind of arrangement. When you buy live plants online you need to let it sit for about five days before you can re-pot it or it will die a terrible death. Lol.

Rubber tree or Ficus Elastica is from a Banyan group within the fig genus where the name ficus is derived. It can grow for about 30 meters or more, a native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. It has vibrant and leathery leaves making it appealing and add a bold pop to any indoor space, and it grows large for those looking for a plant that makes a statement.

There are several Ficus elastica varieties grown successfully indoors, including the most common one. The Ficus elastica decora, with a shiny leather type, leaves which grow to a foot long. The Ficus elastica robusta has larger leaves than decora. And the Ficus elastica black prince also known as burgundy has near black reddish leaves and a selection of variegated types.

There are ways to propagate a rubber tree. You ca do it in water, soil and also by hanging it like the Orchids.

But for this article, I'll show you how to propagate a rubber tree using water and soil. The most common and conventional ones.

And as usual, I have prepared a video solely for you (lol) for the step by step process.

Now as you see it is only the process of how to propagate. The outcome is not yet determined. Don't worry, I'll get you updated after a month for the progress. Was it a success or a big failure. I wish not the latter. Lol.

Stay tuned! Lol.
