In yesterday’s, 24 September 2009 do-or-die match-up before the crowd and spectators at the Araneta Coliseum, the FEU Tamaraws and UE Red Warriors had to battle once again after FEU having the twice-to-beat advantage was defeated by UE in their first encounter on last Saturday’s game, 24 September 2009.
It was the Tamaraw who have enjoyed a convenient lead in all of the first three quarters of the game but at 8:10 to the final canto, UE forward Rudy Lingganay started a five-straight points run and helped Pari Llagas for a go-ahead lay-up basket to finally grab the lead with a 70-68 advantage, first time since the game started.
Determined to win, the Warriors finished the game with a 78-72 victory. Paul Lee and Val Acuna both collected 17 points each while Llagas, Lingganay and veteran Espiritu contributed a total of 37 points. They will be facing defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles for the UAAP crown.
Warriors’ last UAAP Finals appearance was in 2007 after posted a 14-0 record in the elimination but swept by the DLSU Green Archers in the finals.
The last time UE Red Warriors won a UAAP Championship was way back in 1985 under the duo of PBA legends Alan Caidic and Jerry Codinera.
