Life in the Province: Slow yet Refreshing #probinsiya

It's a breath of fresh air. The slow-paced life away from the hustle and bustle of the city is a welcome change of atmosphere. I we...

Down the memory lane, I met Salvacion Cervantes

An MKmA Halloween presentation.

Widowed at the early stage of her married life, young Antonio Cordil left her two precious and beautiful daughters namely Angelina who was 10 and 5-year old Magdalina.

Salvacion Cervantes was always feisty, strong and preferred to work independently and with her new role as both the mother and father to her children, she decided to work her way to raise her family; end up working as a nanny to the family of the soon would be president of the republic, late President Elpidio Quirino.

She entrusted and left Angie to her mother while she brought 5-year old Maggie. She was a stay-in nanny and the Quirino family was very strict, the typical aristocrat of that time so she had no course but left Maggie to her cousin who lives nearby.

Working with the family was like a prisoner in a maximum security; everything was being checked from the food they eat to the clothes before they can use it. She had no way to visit her daughter, the family won't permit her to go out, and it pained her.

The only consolation she's getting was when sunlight brings her beauty inside the room. From time to time she would peek the window anticipating her cousin would bring Maggie outside.

And when it happened, silent cries while staring her daughter would just served as a relief and sometimes when the guards were not around she would drop candies or fruits wrapped in used clothes so it won't spoil when drop from a 10-storey building.

It goes that way for months until one day she was brought by the family for an evening of family affair and while everyone was busy socializing, she finds her way to escape.

The next day she was home together with her daughter.

Lorenzo Muncal was a stranger in town; he came to visit his cousin. Lorenzo was a reserve, calm and mild mannered type of person, he rarely talks unless oral is needed. While getting himself familiar with the new place something had caught his attention. Immediately he headed straight to home and started asking his cousin about the lady he had caught eyes with.

The lady was Salvacion Cervantes and like Salvacion, he was a widow himself. The love affair was quick. He started courting Salvacion and marriage proposal after few months. After their marriage, he brought his new family to his place and treated them as his own.

Lorenzo has three children from his deceased wife but after the plight of his wife they were taken by his in-laws to Palawan but from time-to-time they would visit him. His children and his new family were getting along together and his three children always gave Salvacion a respect that would due for a mother, they like her and so her daughters and contented, seeing their father happy with his new life and family.

Salvacion and Lorenzo were a respected figure in the neighborhood. Everyone loves them especially the fierce, the loud and the always drank Salvacion. Yes, Salvacion has started a habit of drinking regularly when in her 50s. Tuba (cocobeer) was a favorite past-time among the locals, it's all natural and drinking it regularly is healthy. Lorenzo and the daughters actually approved her of such habit.

Angelina finally found the love of her life and settled nearby and was blessed with a dozen and healthy children. At the age of 25, Maggie was married to Benjamin. Salvacion and Maggie always have this connection that most of the time gave Angelina those envious feelings. And by this closeness, despite Maggie's marriage she opted to stay in her mother until her second child was born.

I am blessed because I was born at the care of my grandmother hands.

But father relocated us to our new home when I was a year older leaving Lola Basyon and Lolo Ensong, in their little paradise. Grandma would frequently visit us after and it's always a joy seeing her. While Lolo Ensong was not the type of person who loves travelling, so it was us who paid him a visit. And every time mother would announced that we were visiting them the joy it gave us was irreplaceable this despite the fact that we will be walking the steep terrain of 7 kilometers of narrow and rocky road with talahib and crossing rivers in between.

Paradise is indeed can be found in the remotest of places. No vehicle can ever enter the place for its unusual terrain. It's Mother Nature in its untouched beauty, I say.

But once you get there it's like experiencing the Garden of Eden, well minus the snake and the naked Eve, lol. The place where a haven of different fruits, everywhere you point your sight were trees, corn and rice fields. Farming is their main source of living; Lolo Ensong runs a vast field of corn and rice. Despite simplicity people their lives happily and harmoniously.

Lolo Ensong was taken early with a kidney mal-function. Even a strong woman Lola Basyon started to feel her age. And despite persuading her to come with us, she declined simply because she don't want to be a burden to my mother, she love mother so much. She knew very well that my father's income sometimes was not enough for us that most of the time ended her helping us in any way she's capable of despite her age.

I remember her talking to me when I was in grade school that her only wish before she dies was to see me in my college graduation gown. I promised her. She dies before I can even finish my high school. She dies with failed dreams. I was never the same again.

I was frustrated. Until now, I'm still carrying that frustration. Frustrated because my prayers were not answered. Frustrated because the person I want to share my victory was gone. And frustrated because when I am capable of doing the promised, the person is no longer exist.

It was more than decades and still I cannot move-on. I rarely pray but when I pray my only wish is to see her in my dreams. A very reasonable request if you ask me. My wish was only granted once and it takes ages, it only happened in the middle of this year and it was very short that I wish I can dream of her again. I wish I could record dreams so I can play it over and over again. Although, I must say in that dream she was happy. Maybe she's at peace that she won't interfere those she had left behind.

But I don't get it; I always had dreams about Lolo Ensong but not for her.

And that's how I met Salvacion Cervantes and I am still missing her.

Happy Halloween!

Weekend Getaway: The Luzon Invasion, Part 3 of 3 – Putong Calasiao and the Lady in Manaoag

After that sumptuous lunch at Isdaan, we took a minute of exploring the vicinity. We visited the infamous part of the place, the other side of Isdaan of which you can release all your anger and hatred in the world by throwing plates into pieces.

So, if you’re dreading someone but is unable to kill them, lol. Don’t worry, there’s always a place to go, and that is Gerona, Tarlac. Here, you can unleash your darkside ala the Hulk, by smashing a TV sets on the wall or wreaking havoc by throwing plates into a million pieces.

And if you want it to be dramatic you can always add props, perhaps a banner that bore the face of the person you want mother earth to swallow it whole, lol.

Now, we were getting late so we decided to pay the Lady of Manaoag a visit.

We arrived at four, the once sunny day had suddenly shifted its mood and pouring rains actually welcomed us. We bought candles and distributed to each of us. There wasn’t a crowds, the atmosphere was calm. Four candles were handed to me, immediately I went to the other side, the vacant one. I lighted all four and offered prayers to the Lady of Manaoag. While praying the Our Father, I forgot some of the lines, lol. I have to repeat it thrice until I am convinced it sounded, RIGHT. Toinkz.

After lighting the candles and prayers were offered, we went inside the church to hear mass.

Manaoag, Pangasinan is one of the famous places in the Philippines; it is where the church of the Lady of Manaoag is located. Millions of devotees from all over or even outside the Philippines, visit here to see and offer prayers to the lady saint.

We waited till the mass ended and explored the place outside the church wherein you can buy pasalubong, there were lots of fruits and candies displayed on the sidewalks. We bought the famous Putong Calasiao, tupig, and some tart candies.

It was half an hour past five and the rains started pouring heavily, so we get inside the car and headed back to Manila. Heavy rains, followed us, as we left Manaoag.

Traveling back to Manila was long, I had headache till the next day.

Weekend Getaway: The Luzon Invasion, Part 2 of 3 - Isdaan with Erap and Coy

Trip to Hermosa, Bataan was a productive one that after changing ideas and requirements with the client we're ready to vacate the place. It was already half an hour past one o'clock and we were all starving. We decided to visit Manaoag and climb Baguio afterwards.

That was the original plan.

It was a long journey going back to Sta. Rita to find our way to Tarlac. We were tired, so the mood was in total silence as each of us having our own ways of taking a nap. Then out of the blue, the girls requested for a stop to the nearest gasoline station. They need to release something but abandoned immediately upon the sight of the CR. Que horror, the gestures would tell, lol.

We continued driving and a Jollibee sign was a relief to the girls and so to our delight, we were all starving. But one suggested, what we prefer for lunch - a Jollibee or in Isdaan. We unanimously picked the latter. After half an hour more, we're in Isdaan. The guard greeted us with his big umbrella all over us as we enter the place, lol.

Isdaan is a floating restaurant located along the highway of Gerona, Tarlac, and the restaurant is being managed by Barrio Fiesta that's according to my friend. It was a unique and lovely place, with a combination of native Pinoy atmosphere and at the same time it's as if you're in Thailand with all the smiling Buddha's decorated around the ponds. Upon entering, you will be greeted by a sitting ERAP. Yes, Erap was there, he got a lifesize figurine all smiling to all the visitors coming in.

My friend can't help but to hug him while other took a shot of them hugging as if ERAP was her Lolo (Grandpa). And as we walked the aisle, she screamed because the aisle suddenly moved, the aisle was actually a balsa (raft).

This floating restaurant is actually a fish pond that housed thousands of coy fishes. Everywhere you point your sight; schools of coy were merrily going to and fro. Coy Fish is derived from Koi, the Japanese name for carp. Coy fish originated from Eastern Asia, Aral Sea, Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and are widely cultivated in China and Japan. Coy is a cold water fish and are therefore advised to keep in a pond within a minimum of 1.5 meters in diameter and 4 and a half feet deep in areas that are harshly cold and a meter more of depth in areas that are hot.

Breeding of Coy first became popular in Japan in 19th century when farmers accidentally discovered these brightly colored creatures and started to raise them. Now, Coy fishes are popular that it can be found in most of the pet stores all over the world.

In Japan, Coy symbolizes LOVE and FRIENDSHIP.

While taking pictures of these beautiful creatures we were served with a big bowl of Tinolang Manok and Sinigang na Baboy with a small kaldero (boiler) of rice that is good for two persons. Immediately we abandoned the Coy and proceed to a more pressing task at hand, eating, lol.

From time to time, different groups of singers dressed in baro't saya would come to our table and offer to sing but we do not mind them, we just continue eating until we were full.

It was half an hour past three in the afternoon.

Weekend Getaway: The Luzon Invasion, Part 1 of 3 – The Talahib fields

At ten minutes past seven, I'm ready. We're on a business trip to Hermosa, Bataan. We had an ocular visit to the place to gather information on the project we are starting. It was Saturday morning and EDSA going NLEX was bearable.

I'm still very sleepy that I put on my earphone and take a nap while on road-trip. It wasn't effective; from time to time I had to investigate the commotions every time my friends having fun taking pictures on things it excite them while on side-trip. One of my friends brought her DLSR camera, so taking pictures would always be in a menu every time we had an out of town escapades.

We took the SCTex (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway) for a Dinalupihan exit and we were greeted warmly by mother earth, serene feelings we're suddenly all over us. Seeing those green grassy fields all over the place was just a relief. I felt very calm seeing those beautiful landscapes and eye-catching sceneries.

Very eminent was the grassy fields of white flowery talahib. They were lovely as they enjoyed smiling back at the visitors passing by. Talahib (Saccharum spontaneum) or Kans grass belongs to the family of the sugarcane. Talahib is actually called as the wild sugarcane, and are native of South Asia. Usually grows up to three meters in height and the flowers are usually white in color and when windy months of August to September, these flowers blow with wind and fly to far distances.

Beliefs has it that if you catch the flying flowers in your hands, you can make a wish and blow it back to the wind and your wish will be granted. I love to try it but we're on a hurry so I dismissed the idea. Oh I wanna be a child again, lol.

I was really enjoying the scenery that I never resorted back to my nap. I was contented seeing mother earth in her raw beauty.

We arrived, Hermosa at fifteen minutes past eleven. Immediately, the boys had our usual moment, peeing under the Mango trees, lol. We cannot find proper CR, okay? And beside the idea was embraced after seeing one of the locals doing the same thing, lol.

After the much needed release, we visit the church. It was a lovely church and the architecture was classic, we offered a minute of prayers and ofcourse made a wish. Again, according to belief, if you entered a church for the first time and you make a wish, that wish will be granted. I have done this in every church I visited for the first time. Now, if you ask me if my wishes were granted? Well, I'm still waiting, lol!

Misadventure continues

Oh I wish I am a CISCO certified!

I think I have blogged about it, perhaps some six months ago, I'm not sure though, lol. I had a post about my friends and I having ventured into this Internet Café business. And it so happened that one of my friends (my partners) has this Astaro box (the free version which can only accomodate up to 5 client stations) given to her by a close friend (her friend) and as part of our security plan, we decided to have it tried if it work for us.

The day was Sunday, yes just last Sunday. We had to put “Close for maintenance” sign while we were deciphering how to make it running. Astaro is a strange name for me, if you ask me and so with my friends. So despite the cluelessness but with the help of a downloaded PDF manual, we took chances and after four hours of unplugging and transferring the cable to Astaro box, modem, router, switch and vice versa, we have it worked

The Internet is working but after configuring five of the workstations, the Internet died.

That was the bad news, the good news, well, atleast we knew how to make it work and to accommodate all our workstations we have planned of putting firewall box that each would be capable of managing 5 workstations. But we decided we’re going to do it in a later time so we reconfigured the network back to its original state, and that's without the Astaro, ofcourse.

Now, the real bad news starts here. Some of our work stations, three to be exact were giving a 169.254.x.x IP address. And as per research, it says that if your PC is giving this kind of address then it means your PC is next to useless or actually useless.

And why?

Well, you cannot access your network, you cannot access Internet, it’s like your PC is in total isolation.

We have tried renewing and realeasing the IP, using IPCONFIG /renew and IPCONFIG /release but it gets an error and terminate the action. Then I tried resetting the Winsock and this time using netsh winsock reset since it runs in XP, but still the 169.254.x.x series keep on appearing.

So, I proceed resetting the network stack, with this command netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt. Then I tried to run the IPCONFIG, yes it work, the IP was back to 192.168.x.x very excited about my accomplishment, I ran it again and this time it back to the annoying 169.254.x.x grrrrr!

I’m desperate, so I re-install the OS but after installing it stilh gets the same error. Our last resort is to buy a new network adapter or double check the cabling. We were tired so we left it that way.

We haven’t fixed it until now as a matter of fact so anyone want to extend helps. I’m desperate; I want to commit suicide now, lol.

The Misadventure of A_lamat da Badigard!

Yesterday, I had to request my friend to dropped me at EDSA-BONI instead of the usual place she’s dropping me home because I need to visit Robinsons’ Pioneer. I woke up last morning all sweats and in heat, to think that I am all SOFT, lol.

My Electric fan ceased from functioning; it stopped moving as if Malfoy had just shouted “Stupefy”. It took me 15 minutes to investigate and supposed to fix it but damn I’m only human (ehem, well sometimes, lol). My attempt was futile, it won’t spin.

So my best option is to buy a new one, and that’s the reason I had to drop at Robinson. I came late at 9:30, all the doors were closed. I’m supposed to ask the guard if they’re closing but I remember Vice Ganda and I don’t want the guard answering me with “Ay hindi nagsasara-sarahan lang kami”, haha.

So I have no choice but to find a jeepney queued at the nearest terminal. I was having hard time sitting with only half of my behind touching the seat, damn I was sweating again. The good thing my agony lasted only for a couple of minutes because after a block away the lady seated beside me shouted for a stop, so I was able to sit comfortably.

I’m tired and I was starving and craving for a pizza fries, so I decided to drop at the nearest Greenwich. I ordered pizza fries the big one (they call it sharing), macaroni salad (plus) and a tropicooler, buko pandan. But the lady in the register apologizes and said that buko pandan is not available. A buko pandan tropicooler is always in my menu every time I’m visiting Greenwich. The saleslady suggested some other drinks which all I have declined. I waited for my order and it’s quite a time, grrr I don’t like waiting for too long. After a long more minute my order finally served.

Greenwich is just a walk away from home so this time I decided not to take a ride. I had my laundry the other day and I am supposed to pick it. So I go directly to the laundry shop, then they said to come back after 20 minutes because they were still folding it, I spotted one of the helper folding my jacket actually, so I have no choice but to go straight to home.

What the f*** is going on? Who is behind this conspiracy?

I want to go ballistic and unleash my Wolverine side, not the healing factor but the berserk wolverine. But I realized they were nice people and the reason I have to cross two blocks away for my laundry, this despite the fact that there’s a laundry shop near my place because they were really nice. And I mean really nice not those who only acting nice.

Imagine how frustrated I was that evening? I hate it when things won’t go my way. I cursed to every living and non-living things near me, lol.

So any idea, when I found out that the company I have worked for nearly decade suddenly declared bankruptcy and ceasing all my benefits? If the Quirino Grandstand taking happened earlier before the bankruptcy, I swear I’ll be on Twitter trending topic by that time, haha.

I really hate it when things I wanted would fail. I mean, it’s due for me, there’s no reason it would go wrong? That ain’t fare for crying-out-loud. I declare Jihad for that, lol.

Uh, I'm busted! lol

How about you? Have you been in my shoes before? I'm size 13 btw haha!
