Tutorial | How to Turn your TV into a Giant Monitor for your Laptops #ExtendedMonitor

Working from home is quite rewarding—one of the good things about the new-normal setup. We can work full-time while closely attending to our family, which is perfect if you have small children.

Computers and laptops are essential for a WFH arrangement. However, sometimes it's hard to work on a laptop, especially if you have vision difficulties. I can personally attest to that. I can hardly see the words I am typing. Or when we have MS Teams meetings (or ZOOM/WeBex meetings for most of you) and my peer from overseas presents, I can barely see the content in their presentation.

To fix the problem, I have to mirror my laptop to my TV set without using any cables to connect both devices. This trick works if you have a Smart TV. I have a 42-inch TV, so everything on my laptop monitor is visible—even the white spaces. Lol.

If your TV is the standard or conventional type, you can still use it to mirror your laptop. In this case, you'll need a specific cable—a male HDMI on both ends. Most current laptop models are now equipped with HDMI as the video port, unlike older models that use VGA. You can buy an HDMI cable for about a hundred bucks, depending on its length..

I prepared a tutorial video on how to set up using the Microsoft Extended Monitor feature..

Just a week ago, my old laptop had a screen issue. The upper half of the screen was pixelated, and you could only navigate the lower half. It was impossible to use any application in that state, rendering the laptop practically unusable. Although the OS and its internals, including apps and everything else, were working fine.

Since I couldn't mirror my laptop using the Bluetooth feature because it was located in the upper portion of the app, navigating was impossible with half the screen. So, I bought an HDMI cable to see if it would work.

Lo and behold, it worked perfectly! I can now use my laptop with the defective screen, even though I have been given a new replacement unit. Lol.

Whatever situation you may encounter, you can use this trick to stay productive while working from home.

Stay at home and keep safe!
