Last SONA of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

Small, yet fierce and firm woman, dressed in her usual terno as she gives one-by-one her so-called achievements during her time as the president of the Republic of the Philippines.

In her last SONA (State of the Nation Address), President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo summarizes her accomplishments despite criticisms from various groups. And instead of giving us the scorecard of the projects she have achieved for the last year, since this will be her last term, she enumerated the long term programs that she started, inherited and finished and together with the policies she have implemented during her term.

On Economy being her strongest asset, she said that inspite of the global crisis brought about by the financial meltdown all over the world, Philippines has managed to maintain and continue its growth.

And I agree with her, while its true that Philippines has merely suffered a decline in growth but still maintain a positive growth rate as compare to its neighboring countries who were experiencing a negative growth rate in GDP.

Still on economy. During her term she cut the debt of the government corporations from 15 % to 7% and foreign debts from 73% to 32%.

This is good news that she managed to cut our foreign debts having been a burden to us every time the foreign currency fluctuated, a debts that’s been a problem since the time of Marcos administration.

On Infrastructure. She claimed that in her administration, we have airports of international standard, upgraded domestic airports, built seaports and the roll on/roll off transport system.

Well what can I say; tourism industry is growing as I’m hearing about it. So these trends could attribute to our better infrastructure projects.

On Education. She cited various development on education, the increase in number of school buildings, teachers, government scholarship grants and the plan to increase college to five years; two pre-university and three professional years.

I disagree with this one. Additional year of College would only lead to the increase of household expenses and is unforgivable at this point of time. Why won’t the government instead put focus by monitoring schools to make sure the quality of being feed to the student?

On cheaper medicines. A good move that will beneficial to the poor and our senior citizen who are in need of maintenance prescription.

On her travels. She reiterated that in her every travels she always brought home foreign investors to strengthen our economy. Encourages OFW to bring more remittances for investments. But unlike other any government officials her travel expenses were always the target of criticism.

On her critics. She had unleashed her acid-tongue by lambasting two of her very vocal critics who both eyeing for presidential election.

A hard worker despite the negative public perceptions, deals the harshest criticisms yet manage to stand on her feet and continue to work, to make Philippines a better place in the face of the planet. And as she bids goodbye, I am proud and convinced, I have made the right decision (ooops ooops ibaba ang mga kilay walang pakialaman ng trip ahahaha). Well, I have voted her to be the president of this country.

The Sandman: Endless Nights

I’m kind of bored last night that I had to rescan my bookshelves for the Nth times for a possible re-reading session. Doomsday over at HBO wasn’t enough to keep my melatonin at bay.

As my eyes working on the titles, I spotted the greenish cover of Half-Blood Prince, then I remember how horrible the movie was, so I left it untouched.

And here comes, The Endless Nights. Yes, this is perfect; I said and removed it from the shelves.

This copy was my very first Sandman books and not only it’s my first introduction to the colorful Dream’s adventure but this book also has an emotional value. A dear friend gave this book to me when she had her vacation in the Philippines. I was so excited that my hand I think was shaking as she handed me the two hard-bounded cover of Neil Gaiman’s books – the other one is the American Gods.

The Sandman: Endless Nights

The Sandman is Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed comic book series. It’s a story collected in ten volumes that came out monthly starting at the end of 1988 until 1996 for DC Comics’, Vertigo.

In Endless Nights, Gaiman introduces us the member of the majestic family of the Endless. Started with Death in Chapter I, the second oldest and perhaps the less likely to be with of the Endless siblings. She’s both the end of life and a psychopomp, and unlike any personification of Death, she also visits people as they are born. She’s attractive, with pale skinned woman and dressed in casual, mostly black and jeans. She’s pleasant, down-to-earth, and perky character that makes her one of the most popular characters in Sandman.

In Chapter II, Desire the third youngest of the Endless and twin of Despair. Perhaps the cruelest of the Endless, obsessed with interfering the affairs of its elder siblings, particularly Dream. Strikingly beautiful whose gender is mutable becoming female, male, both or neither as the situation warrants. A medium height, that smells faintly of a summer peaches with pale as smoke skin and has a tawny and sharp as yellow wine eyes.

Chapter III, talks about the Sandman himself, Morpheus or Dream. Inconceivably powerful beings older and greater than gods, he’s a personification of all dreams and stories in short; an illusion and therefore is not real. His appearance changing depends on the person who is seeing him. And although he’s of heroic character, most of the time he is slow in dealing with humor, slightly insensitive, self-obsessed and very slow to forgive and forget.

Despair is the twin sister of Desire, a squat, flabby and pale-skinned with black hair and gray eyes and pointed teeth. Have a voice more little than a whisper and doesn’t wear clothes. Her realm is gray space that floats white fog and countless mirrors that connected to a human world and looks on those who are in despair. Chapter IV is illustrated by Barron Storey.

Chapter V tells about Delirium. The youngest of the Endless yet older than the rest of the existence, usually quite short, thin and look no more than a fourteen year old girl. One of her eyes is blue, the other is green. She smells of sweat, late nights, sour wine and old leather. Her realm is chaotic and constantly changing mass of colors and strange objects and shapes. She travel with her guardian of sort, a German shepherd named Barnabas. She first incarnated as Delight and transformed into Delirium for reasons even Destiny does not know.

Chapter VI is about Destruction, the fourth eldest of the Endless, depicted as big, red haired and bearded man. He abandoned his realm and responsibilities at the turn of seventeenth century, that leads to his siblings Delirium and Dream to track him down, a choice that to some degree infuriates Morpheus. After giving up his responsibilities he concentrates on attempting to learn about his own nature and exert control over it.

And finally the last chapter is about Destiny. He is blind but this doesn’t hinder him and matter-of-factly he sees everything. He is always calm, detached and somber even in extreme situations. Portrayed as a tall figure, obscured within a purple or brown robe and cowl, he does not leave footprints, nor cast a shadow. He reads from a large book, originally known as a Cosmic Log, chained to his right wrist that contains all past, present and future events.

INDAY: Chambermaid Extraordinaire

What kind of dim-witted, ill-willing person holds proprietorship of this structural malady? Had he not the knowledge of the building codes set forth in international conventions by known intellectual committees. How dare he violate these rules when the very epitome of these things I say are embodied in the Building code of the Philippines as stated in the Republic Act 6541 authored on August 26 in the year of the Lord 1972. Had this structure existed even before that? I think not. Therefore you have peddled against the R.A. 6541, which gives me the stands to lead this to court with a count of attempted homicide and the evasion of responsibilities according to the said Republic Act.

HAHAHA!

Kapitan Sino

First of all, I love the black, white and silver combination. Wow! It’s like seeing a cover of DC’s Vertigo. The aluminum paper foil cover is classy and very comic book. Not to mention the silvery effect forming into a lightning rays as if the Norse god himself, the god of thunder – the Mighty Thor had just gone ballistic by smashing his ever so big hammer. Ayayaay! For Odin’s blood!

Yes, ladies and gents – Bob Ong this time, takes on the superheroes and superpowers.

Kapitan Sino

Hmmm! Ain’t it SUPER already?

And in his continued effort to be a hero of the masses (Erap ‘kaw ba ito?) which of course will always be his favorite subject, Bob Ong, once again uses the mediocrity in introducing his new baby, by delicately dissecting the choices of words; of which making it sure his subject will fully understands.

Kapitan Sino (Captain Who) presented the stereotypical, the existential perception of superheroes. Someone with extra-ordinary power and should therefore required to help and save people because of that given ABILITY. Or was it a given CURSE?

Rogelio Manglicmot was amazed with his new found power. Realizing his no ordinary individual; with the help of his friend he was convinced and started a crusade. “To help those who cannot help for themselves.” He knew from the start, it’s not an easy path but he feels it is his responsibility to use and share it with others by protecting those in needs.

Though Bob Ong talks about super talent; in this book he simply wants to send us the message that anyone can be a hero without the super power and extra-ordinary ability. We can be a hero by starting helping others in our own little way. We do not need the power of agility, flight or super strength to help those in needs and making a difference for the betterment of our society. We do not need someone with strange skills to save us. We can be a HERO of our own lives.

Walang pag-asa ang mga taong naghahangad ng mga kakaibang nilalang na magliligtas sa kanila.
There’s no hope for those who only wait for someone with (special) power to save them.

True. If we want a better place, a better society, a better Philippines then let’s start helping ourselves.

Yesterday, I was on Facebook doing my daily rituals (playing the Farm Town and Pet Society) when Chairman Bayani Fernando (his in my list) posted a message on his wall, it says:
“May tungkulin ka. May tungkulin ang pamahalaan. Lahat tayo ay may pananagutan.”
You have a responsibility. The government has a responsibility. All of us are accountable.

We can start playing Rogelio Manglicmot. Each one of us can be the Kapitan Sino. Starts your adventure now!

Harry Potter and the Half-Done Movie

So you’re a squib or maybe a muggle and you are dying to see the sixth installment of Harry Potter being your favorite book of all the series.

So excited that you even invited friends to come along and witness to what could be your finest moment in your life - even if it cost you big time by giving them free tickets that comes with a free snacks.

Yippee! The movie started… Yahoo! The mass breakout of the Death Eaters from Azkaban was way too cool; Uh oh the London Bridge is falling now! Isn’t it amazing?

Then you were taken aback when Professor Slughorn showed up after disguising himself to be a rounded sofa. Uh come on now, I thought he’s short, stout and stocky but he looks like he’s 6 feet and 5 inches tall, he’s even taller than Dumby.

And you almost shouted Ah what! If not for the commotion it would cost if the moviegoers heard the wailings, can you imagine it was Luna Lovegood who discovered Harry at the Hogwarts Express cabin after he was attacked by Malfoy and not Nymphadora Tonks, I know Tonks can change the color of her hair into pink or magenta but for sure she’s not a shape shifter, but of course I love Luna so it’s okay, what is your name again, Mr. Director?

And here comes the snogging moments, “Oi Ron Ron” was Lavender Brown favorite words as Hermione Granger eavesdropping furiously.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince movie is a total disappointment, well at least for me. I was anticipating the pure magic and dark arts battle between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix but unfortunately not included. I won’t even count that altered scene, the one with the Weaseleys when Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback suddenly attacked The Burrow).

Out of five, I’ll give it 2 stars that’s because I enjoyed the snogging part lol.

P.S.
SECTUMSEMPRA skzkzkzzzzzkt, that's for David Yates ahahaha.

Farewell to the King, an H & E tribute

I’m not a Michael Jackson fan though I must admit, I like some of his songs and Ben is my favorite.

A legend, an American phenomenon that shakes the world for his contribution to music and for his passing – the world mourned for the man.

And as tribute to the icon, one restaurant in Makati, the Heaven & Eggs (H&E) greet their patrons to a Jacko inspired ambiance from the screens that play a Michael Jackson concert, the waiters wearing an I Love MJ shirts of course carrying an MJ inspired dishes.

Take Jackson 5 for example, a pancake combo of which four are made of dark chocolate and the other one is of white chocolate. Thriller, in tribute to his greatest hit is made of Banana Waffles with Raspberry straps. A Neverland with a colorful candy layers and the Moonwalk, a double layer fudge brownies with large ice cream on top.

Good bye MJ.

P.S.
Those MJ shirts worn by the crews are from us (ad eto lol).
